New Mexican Traditional Art
in the Contemporary World

The history of the state of New Mexico: in what way has history affected local culture? Could history have fused with the land to create an independent culture that has endured through time? By introducing various works from contemporary New Mexico, it’s possible to unravel the underlying culture of the region.

Nicolasa Chávez

Born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1972.She received her M.A. in History with a concentration in ModernEuropean /Iberian Studies at the University of New Mexico.She has conducted research in Spain, Mexico, and Argentina dedicated to the artistic and cultural traditions in those countries and how they relate to the current Hispano traditions in the United States.She has participated as a panelist for the Spanish Colonial Arts So ciety’s Spanish Market, the New Mexico Folk Arts Division and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Australian Indigenous craft and design

Through the handcrafting traditions of the Indigenous people of Australia, interesting and relevant artworks from the design-inspired exhibition at Object (Australian Design Centre) will show visitors the possibility of contemporary Indigenous art.

Steven Pozel

Director of Object : Australian Design Centre, Australia

Born in Toronto, Canada in 1959. His education and continued professional development has included York University, Toronto; the Banff School of Management; Getty Institute for Museum Management, UCLA (Berkeley); and Australian School of Business, UNSW, Sydney.He has been the Director / Ideator of Object: Australian Design Centre since 2000. He is a founding and current Board Member of the Australian Design Alliance. He has previously been a member of Australian Government’s National Cultural Policy Reference Group as well as a guest speaker at the 2012 Prime Minister’s Forum on the Digital Economy.

Lisa Cahill

Adjunct Curator of Object:
Australian Design Centre, Australia

Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1963. Her education and professional development has includedthe University of Canberra, the University of New South Wales and she has participated in several management programs for senior government officials. She has held several senior government positions at the national and local level in Australia, including the Australian Broadcasting Authority, the Australia Council for the Arts and the City of Sydney Council. She was also research manager for the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies. She has been the Executive Director of the Australian Design Alliance since 2010.

Revolving around artworks created with the techniques of weaving and knitting, as well as those using bamboo, a material close to the heart of Taiwan’s culture, the contemporary art and design of Taiwan can be observed through the development of its crafting techniques and creative expression.

Japan

This Land and its Skills of Hand, Narrowness
and Regional Depth

Various views and representations of crafts have emerged due to modernization in Japan that has come since the Meiji Period. To show a part of that expansion and diversification, works by currently active craft artists will be introduced. From those works, discovering the Japanese “making-things” spirit, perfection through handiwork, and the expansion of crafts in Japan.

AKIMOTO Yuji

Director of 21 Century Museum
of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan

Born in Tokyo in 1995. He graduated from the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. After serving the Chief curator of Benesse Art Site Naoshima, he served the Director of Chichu Art Museum, managing director of Naoshima Fukutake Art Museum Foundation, and artistic director of Benesse Art Site Naoshima from 2004 to December 2006. He is the Director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa from April 2007.He directed the First International Triennale of Kogei in Kanazawa, which presented new generations of crafts to a global audience.As well as organizing Art Crafting Toward the Future, an exhibition which inquires into the contemporary validity of kôgei and its universality
