Application Information

Overview

The city of Kanazawa established the Kanazawa Arts and Crafts Competition in 1989, and following its declaration as a “World Craft City” in 1995, has regularly held the World Craft City Conference in Kanazawa and the Kogei World Competition in Kanazawa to preserve and promote the culture of craft—kogei—in the world.

The Kogei World Competition in Kanazawa aims to make known the vanguard of craft. It transmits what is new in the realm of craft from Kanazawa to the world, seeking works that make use of previously developed and refined craft techniques to produce appealing works based on outstanding concepts and ideas. It calls for works that reflect a keen grasp of the driving force of contemporary artistic expression from the perspective of, and toward the future of, craft. We continue our commitment to fostering younger artists through the Next Generation Award, for which applicants under the age of thirty-five are eligible, to support recipients as they take on bold new challenges. Works in such genres and media as ceramics, metalwork, textile, lacquer, wood, bamboo, glass, dolls, leather, cloisonné, and paper are welcomed. We eagerly await submissions filled with promise for a new era.

On Sunday, July 27, 2025, the judges will undertake the final judging by examining the works themselves. In the final judging, the award-winning works are selected. Works that do not receive awards will be accepted for installation in the Triennale of Kogei exhibition hall.

  • International Applicants

Delivery dates (provisional): Please ensure that the works arrive between Monday, June 23 and Friday, June 27, 2025.

Where to send them (provisional): Please send works to the designated airport (TBA).

Regarding the Shipment and Transport of Works

  • After applicants have submitted their Exhibition Consent Form, they will be asked to ship their works to a designated location during the designated period. This information will be included with the exhibition guidelines.
  • Costs required for shipment of works are to be covered by the applicants.
  • Packaging works in a box or case that ensures their safe transport is the responsibility of the applicant.
  • Applicants bringing their work in person are also asked to package it in a box or case to protect it during transport.
  • Works that have not been packaged for transport will not be accepted.
  • The Executive Committee takes no responsibility for damage to works during their transport. Where necessary, applicants will be asked to protect their works with insurance to ensure their safe transport.
  • On the date of their arrival, works will be unpackaged and inspected. Should any damage to works be found at this time, applicants will be notified by the Executive Committee. The applicant is to handle any subsequent repairs or insurance claims.
  • The Executive Committee takes no responsibility should a work incur damage during transport to such an extent that it is no longer suitable for evaluation or exhibition.
  • Should the applicant ship a work that is not the same as that evaluated in the preliminary screening, they will be disqualified. Their entry will not be eligible for evaluation or exhibition.
  • The works will be displayed for the final round of evaluation and the exhibition by referring to the photographs of the works provided by the applicant. When returning the Exhibition Consent Form and transporting the work, please provide sketches or special instructions if the work requires special assembly or points to be attended to.
  • Specialists hired by the Executive Committee will undertake the handling and supervision of submitted works. The Executive Committee takes no responsibility should such factors as the complexities of a work’s assembly and/or the instructions for its arrangement be detrimental to its ultimate evaluation or exhibition.

Regarding Shipment of Works from Abroad

All of the following apply to international entries.

  • Works are to undergo customs clearance on the assumption that they are to be returned after the exhibition.
  • For works with a Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) price of 10,000 JPY or more, please do not ship using the postal service or an international parcel-shipping company, as the work may be unable to clear customs when import duty taxes are taken into consideration. Even if the work provisionally clears customs, import duty taxes may be assessed when exporting the work from Japan. In these cases, import duty taxes will be considered the responsibility of the applicant submitting the work. When a work is sent by the postal service or an international parcel-shipping company, it is regarded as domestic cargo rather than as imported cargo. This can create complications for its customs clearance as it leaves the country that make its return difficult, if not impossible. The price encompasses the total value of the work being shipped, including shipping and insurance fees.
  • Customs clearance fees or shipping fees within Japan will be considered the responsibility of the Executive Committee.
  • In the event that necessary information is not included on the customs clearance invoice, or a value differing from that written on the Exhibition Consent Form is written on the invoice, there is a possibility that the work will not clear customs. Make sure that the same value is written on both the invoice and Exhibition Consent Form.
  • The Executive Committee assumes no responsibility in the event that the work does not clear customs due to a problem or error in preparation of the invoice, preventing the work from arriving in time for the final judging and/or exhibition.
  • Should an applicant residing abroad bring the work to Japan themselves or delegate someone to bring it for them, import duty taxes, fees for clearing customs, or costs incurred for the work’s domestic transport are to paid by the applicant. The Executive Committee will not pay for any of these expenses.
  • The Executive Committee will communicate directly only with the applicant, even if the applicant elects to delegate the work’s shipping and transport to a third party.
  • When preparing packaging materials for shipping a work, use only wood (e.g., for a wooden crate or box) if it has been heat-treated. Wood that is used for packaging materials must have been heat-treated or be certified as fumigated. This is because wood must be certified as fumigated to ship it back to its place of origin, even if it reaches the Executive Committee without incident when shipped by the applicant. The Executive Committee cannot take on the effort or expense of handling issues with a work’s packaging materials. These restrictions do not apply when using plywood.
  • Works will be returned using EMS for applicants sending works from such countries as China or the United States where private import is strictly regulated. Please therefore ensure that the packaging materials used for shipping your work meet the size regulations issued by EMS for your country.
  • Due to factors like import duty tax laws and other regulations, along with the Washington Convention, etc., works produced using certain plant or animal products may have trouble clearing customs and thus fail to arrive on time. Furthermore, such works will face difficulties going through customs when they leave Japan to be returned to the applicant. Please be aware that costs may be incurred on the recipient’s end for works unable to clear customs on either side of their international transport.

III. The Publicizing of Results and Notifications

The results of the final round of judging will be made public on our website. Only award recipients will receive notification by email.

IV. Critique and Commentary Event

On the day of the final round of evaluation, the judges will present their critique and commentary on the works. The time, venue, and other details of this event will be made public on our website as soon as they have been decided.

However, the committee assumes no responsibility for reparation payments in the event of a natural disaster or other such circumstances beyond our control.
  • Please be sure to set a monetary value for the work to be sent. This information is required when determining the amount for which a work is to be insured.
  • Any intellectual property connected to a work submitted shall belong to the applicant. However, the stipulations below apply with regard to the use of said intellectual property:

    1. The intellectual property for exhibited works may be used by the Executive Committee and other local bodies, etc., in the case of any displays or promotional activities connected to the exhibition.

    3. The period during which the intellectual property for displayed works may be used is not limited.
    4. If a party seeks to use photographs of the works displayed in the exhibition for some commercial purpose, the relevant negotiations will be handled by said party and the applicant submitting the photographs.
    5. The Executive Committee is authorized to take new photographs of works receiving awards and/or selected for exhibition and to use any such images produced.
    6. Sketching or photography of the works in the exhibition, with the exception of news coverage or documentation by the Executive Committee, shall be, as a general rule, prohibited.
  • Works shall not be returned to the applicant before the conclusion of the exhibition for any reason.

IV. Return of Works (Within Japan)

  • Works will be returned following the exhibition using a transport company to be hired by the Executive Committee. Works will be packaged for shipment with the utmost care by specialists in packaging artworks to be appointed by the Executive Committee. While unlikely, should any damage incurred during shipment be discovered upon the work’s unpacking, please directly contact the transport company within 14 days of its arrival. The Executive Committee cannot confirm damage, and as such it will be unable to respond to any claims.
  • Shipping and insurance fees for works being returned within Japan shall be paid by the submitting applicant. The cost of packaging works for their return shipment will be borne by the Executive Committee. After the exhibition, an estimate of shipping fees will be sent to the applicant at the e-mail address provided in the application form. On a subsequent date, an invoice will be sent and the payment should be made as specified. Once receipt of payment has been confirmed, the shipping process will begin. Should there be no confirmation of payment, the work will be stored for a reasonable duration and then discarded.

V. Return of Works (Internationally)

  • For applicants residing abroad, the Executive Committee will pay the cost of shipping the work as far as an international airport in the applicant’s country of residence.
  • Any expenses incurred in clearing customs when the work enters the recipient’s country, as well as in domestic shipment to the applicant, shall be borne by the applicant.
  • Please note in advance that in the event a work cannot be returned because the applicant refuses to cover expenses related to clearing customs and/or transporting the work from the international airport to the applicant’s address, the work will be discarded.
  • In the case of an applicant residing abroad providing an address within Japan for its return shipment, the shipping costs and cost of insurance during transport is to be paid by the applicant upon delivery. Please note in advance that the Executive Committee may send an invoice to the applicant for import duty taxes or the cost of domestic shipping incurred when the work was submitted to the Competition.
  • Should the applicant refuse return of the work, it will be disposed of by the Executive Committee. Please acknowledge this condition when filling out the Exhibition Consent Form.
  • Works will be returned around 2.5 months following the exhibition’s conclusion.
