The 5th Triennale of Kogei in Kanazawa features an open-call exhibition and a special exhibition. This year’s theme is “Craft Visions.” The open-call exhibition, which introduces expressive artworks characterized by outstanding creativity, showcases how crafts (Kogei) continue to spread and evolve on the global stage. The triennial’s special exhibition features a diverse selection of works from the collections of the National Crafts Museum, the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, exhibited alongside winning works from the 2022 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize. We hope that the exhibited artworks, which highlight craft materials and techniques, present viewers with a broad field of visionary expression and new possibilities.

Special Exhibition: Craft Visions
Craft Visions
The Triennale of Kogei in Kanazawa presents its fifth edition. During the past three years, the world has changed dramatically. We felt it was important to reconsider the triennial’s purpose within the context of these difficult and complicated times. We wanted to provide an opportunity to reexamine crafts (kōgei) as they have been—and then to imagine what form they may take in the future. This was our intent behind choosing the theme of “Craft Visions.”

The triennial’s special exhibition features works from the collections of the National Crafts Museum, the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. The selection from the National Crafts Museum features tea utensils by twelve artists and a tearoom. The tea utensils were commissioned as part of a crowdfunding initiative that marked the museum’s relocation to Ishikawa Prefecture and grand opening. The selection from the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art highlights the ties between local culture and craft, featuring works of lacquer by Kanazawa maki-e and Wajima lacquerware artisans, metal inlay by two metalsmiths who were master-and-disciple, and works of yūzen dyeing by one artisan in two different formats. The selection from the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, features diverse works that offer a glimpse of a new age.
The special exhibition also features the award-winning works from the 2022 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, an international prize that recognizes exceptional works of craftsmanship and creativity. We are honored by this opportunity to collaborate with the Loewe Foundation, a prominent promoter and supporter of crafts.
Craft arts continue to evolve with the times, expanding more than ever due to international perspectives. We hope that these richly creative and expressive works, produced with craft materials and techniques, will offer visitors a sense of the field’s newest developments and expressive potential.
